Colonial Children in America Webquest

Children in Colonial America WebQuest

Most Americans in the 1770’s  were much more self-sufficient than people are today.  They raised their own food and wove their own cloth for clothes.  They built their own homes and barns, made their own tools and furniture, and even made their own medicines.

They traded any extra farm products for goods and services that they could not get for themselves. Have you ever wondered what it was like to live back in colonial times? Would you have been able to survive without all of the luxuries that we have today? But what about the colonists' children?  You have been transported back in time to colonial America. You are one of eight children in your family. Your task is to compare your life in this time to your life in the Twenty First Century, and to research the lifestyle of the travelers to the New World.
PART 1  LINK
Answers to the following questions:
1.What is your everyday dress?
2.What might you have for dinner tonight?
3.How do you spend you leisure time?
4.How do your receive your education?
5.What are you career opportunities? Hint: What is a trade?
6. Do you receive an allowance?
Some thoughts to ponder:
What does indentured mean?
What is an apprentice?
7.How will your family celebrate holidays such as Christmas?

PART 2

Research the lives of colonial children.  (Take notes in your notebook please).  You will answer the  questions that you responded to about your own life, but from the view of a colonial child. You will create a Venn diagram to show the differences and similarities between you and colonial American children.

PART 3

You will learn all you can about daily life of families in colonial America. You will need to research to find important facts about your topic and take notes in your technology notebook.  We will brainstorm some ways that can you can present your research once you have gathered all your information.

Here are some topics to research for your report:
  • How did colonists get food?
  • What were their homes like?
  • How did they earn a living?
  • How did they get around?
  • Did they have schools? What were they like?
  • How did they get products or services that they might need?
  • Other interesting facts about colonial life.
Remember to use the index when searching print (books) material.
Be sure to write down URLs (website addresses) to cite (show) evidence of where you found the information.

Was a colonial child's life much different from your own?
Was the family an important part of colonial life?  (These two questions will be used in the conclusion of your radio program.)

STEP 1 - Brainstorm
First, brainstorm all of the things you know about early American settlers and New England.
•What do you know about Pilgrims?
•What do you know about Native Americans?
•What do you know about the Mayflower?
•What do you know about Thanksgiving?
•How would you explain your family's celebration of Thanksgiving to someone from another planet?

STEP 2 - The Journey

Sailing on wooden ships, like the Mayflower, all the way across the Atlantic ocean, took many months. In modern time, taking a non-stop flight from Los Angeles, California to London, England takes about 15 hours. The journey in the Mayflower from Southampton to Plymouth took 165 days.

•Approximately how many weeks in 165 days?
•How many Months?
•How many hours?
•How many meals would the passengers consume assuming they eat three meals a day?
•How many more hours did the Pilgrims spend sailing than it takes for a modern traveler to fly from Los Angeles, California to London, England?
•How did the travelers navigate across the ocean with out the aid of modern technology? What prevented them from getting lost?

Explore websites to find your answers. Be sure to keep a list (copy and paste URL) in your document.

STEP 3 - The Travelers
In order to keep all of the passengers alive while on the long journey, many provisions had to be stored on board the ship. The Pilgrims also had to think about what things they would need in the New World to survive.

Write a list of all of the provisions you think the 102 Pilgrims needed to take with them on the long voyage across the ocean. Remember, they had to eat and survive in what could possibly be an unfriendly environment.

Charlie Chaplin
By Sharon Fabian

1 "A day without laughter," said Charlie Chaplin, "is a day wasted." Charlie Chaplin spent his career trying to make sure that a day without laughter never had to happen. He created enough funny moments on film to add laughter to many days.

2 Charlie Chaplin became a film star in the era of silent films. He made silent films in the 1920's, films with music and sound effects in the 1930's, and talkies in the 1940's. Whatever kind of movies he starred in, they always made people laugh.

3 Making silent movies was challenging, and being funny in a silent movie must have been an even greater challenge. Charlie Chaplin solved the problem by creating a character known as The Tramp.

4 The Tramp had a style all his own. He wore a tight, shabby coat, really big, baggy pants, and a derby hat. He carried a cane to add a touch of class to his appearance, and always sported a toothbrush moustache. He moved with a silly, bow-legged walk, but he always tried to use the manners of a high-class gentleman.

5 The tramp was a kind-hearted person. He had big dreams too, but his lack of respect for authorities tended to get him in trouble. His fumbling, bumbling way of doing things often caused him problems too, but it made for very funny scenes on film. In fact, the combination of qualities and styles that Chaplin gave to The Tramp resulted in a character that was irresistible to movie audiences.

6 The Tramp even starred in his own film - also called The Tramp. It was a short film; the plot involved various troubles with other tramps, the rescue of a farmer's daughter, and more troubles with the daughter's boyfriend. At the end of the movie, The Tramp moved on.

7 The Tramp was also the main character in feature films of the silent era and on into the era of talking motion pictures. One of his best known films is Modern Times, written and directed by Charlie Chaplin and released in 1936. Modern Times was one of the last silent films ever made. Although it has music and sound effects, it is still considered a silent movie because the characters do not speak.

8 In Modern Times, The Tramp lands a job working in a factory. He works on the assembly line, and in a classic comedy scene, The Tramp himself somehow ends up traveling through the gears of the conveyor belt.

9 Modern Times had a serious side too. While it was making movie-goers laugh, it was also reminding them of the troubles real people were having during this time in history that later became known as the Great Depression.

10 One of Chaplin's most famous talkies also had a serious message about current events. The Great Dictator, released in 1940, featured a comic character, with a toothbrush moustache, who looked amazingly like Adolf Hitler. In the movie, this dictator ruled a place called Tomania, and gave speeches that mocked the speeches of Adolf Hitler. Chaplin played two roles in the film - the dictator and a Jewish soldier. The Jewish soldier also wore a toothbrush moustache, but he looked and acted just like The Tramp.

11 Charlie Chaplin starred in many more films during his long career. Some of these were A Dog's Life, The Gold Rush, City Lights, and Limelight. In 1975, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. He died in 1977.

12 A biographical film was later made about his life. It is called Chaplin, and it is about someone who knew how to make people laugh.

Reading Comprehension

The Best Burgers Ever
By Beth Beutler
1 Frederick was enjoying his stay in America as a foreign exchange student. He had come to America in January to stay for one year with a family in New England. This family loved to go camping in a big RV. In France, Frederick had never gone camping in anything but a tent. Truthfully, he didn't consider traveling in an RV as "real" camping, but he surely enjoyed it!

2 One of his favorite parts of traveling with the McKennas was eating the wonderful food they prepared. Mr. and Mrs. McKenna really knew how to throw a feast, especially when they were camping. Mr. McKenna's specialties were big, juicy hamburgers on the grill. But these were not just any hamburgers. Mr. McKenna had a secret recipe. Frederick had never tasted meat that was more tender and flavorful. He was determined to learn how to make these burgers before returning to France! And today was the day to find out!

3 Mr. McKenna was firing up the grill when Frederick stepped out of the RV.

4 "Time for some more burgers?" Frederick asked hopefully.

5 "Yes," Mr. McKenna said with a grin.

6 "Your burgers are the best I've ever tasted, Mr. M, " Frederick said. (The McKennas allowed Frederick to call them Mr. and Mrs. M.)

7 "Thank you, Frederick."

8 "Would you tell me your secret?" Frederick asked.

9 "My secret?"

10 "Yes. Your secret recipe for making such good burgers."

11 "Oh, that," Mr. McKenna replied with a laugh. "I didn't realize it was a secret. Sure, I'll be glad to tell you."

12 "First of all, it starts with good meat. We purchase high quality ground beef from a butcher. We used to buy beef that had a higher fat content, but we are trying to watch our fats. Now we buy lean ground beef and marinate the meat instead."

13 "What does marinate mean?" Frederick asked.

14 "It simply means to let the meat soak in a mix of sauces and spices. That allows the flavor to permeate--or soak through--the meat."

15 "So," Frederick interjected, "the flavors add to the beef and also keep the beef moist?"

16 "Exactly," said Mr. McKenna.

17 "What is in the marinade?"

18 "I use a little vinegar, brown sugar, soy sauce, and honey," Mr. McKenna said. "I let the burgers sit in it for at least an hour."

19 "So, the juices sink into the meat, and grilling the burgers seals in the flavor, right?" Frederick asked.

20 "You've got it! Do you want to help me with this next batch?"

21 "Sure!"

22 Frederick got the burgers out of the RV refrigerator and brought them to the hot grill. Mr. M placed them on the rack and handed Frederick the long-handled spatula for flipping the burgers. As Frederick stepped toward the grill, the flames leapt up beyond the rack. Frederick jumped back. Mr. M laughed.

23 "Don't worry. The sauce and juices landing on the coals are causing the flames. In my opinion, the flames actually add flavor! Just be careful around them."

24 It didn't take long for the burgers to cook in that heat, so Frederick gathered the buns, condiments, lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes. Mr. M called out to the family, and soon everyone was sitting around the picnic table, enjoying the pleasant breeze while feasting on the best burgers ever. And, Frederick could barely wait to try this recipe back in France.
